2017 University Turbine Systems Research Project Review Meeting

2017 UNIVERSITY TURBINE SYSTEMS RESEARCH PROJECT REVIEW MEETING
November 1-2, 2017
Pittsburgh, PA

Agenda

The 2017 University Turbine Systems Research (UTSR) Project Review Meeting was held on November 1-2, 2017, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Pittsburgh Downtown, near the University of Pittsburgh campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The theme was “Impact of Additive Manufacturing on Gas Turbines.” The workshop was well received, with a total of 121 attendees from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), universities, national labs, and small businesses. The opening session included welcoming remarks by Dr. Gregory Reed, Director of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Energy and the Energy GRID Institute, and an overview of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy’s (FE) Advanced Turbines Program by National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) Advanced Turbines Technology Manager, Richard Dennis. The workshop included a panel discussion on additive manufacturing involving gas turbine OEMs, developers, and practitioners. Rob Gorham, Executive Director of America Makes, was one of the keynote speakers, with more than a decade of solid defense research and advanced manufacturing experience. Prior to joining America Makes, Dr. Gorham was the Senior Manager of the Manufacturing Exploration and Development (MXD) group within the Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Prototyping (AMS&P) directorate of Lockheed Martin (LM) Aeronautics – Advanced Development Programs (ADP). Dave Conover, Chief Technologist at ANSYS, Inc., was the other keynote speaker. Dr. Conover has more than 35 years of experience in mechanical computer-aided engineering (CAE) software development with ANSYS, during which time he has been involved in the development of elements, nonlinear material models, solution strategies, and solvers. Turbine experts from various fields presented a total of 42 technical presentations on their research. The University of Pittsburgh sponsored a poster composition at the workshop, and two poster sessions allowed for exhibition of 24 technical posters as part of the competition.
