Field Demonstration of Chemical Flooding of the Trembley Oilfield, Reno County, Kansas

Chemical flooding technology has the potential to significantly increase oil production in many of the mature oilfields in the US, most of which are operated by small producers and independent oil companies. This potential is realized using existing infrastructure with little or no additional environmental impact. Small producers have not employed chemical flooding technology due to the potential benefits that are only based on laboratory studies and the significant financial resources required. The objective of the proposed work is to design and implement a chemical flood for the Trembley field, located in Reno County, Kansas. The purpose is to demonstrate a chemical flooding application and to provide successful, detailed field results of the flood to the small-producer community and the industry. This publicity will promote the technology to small producers, resulting in significant increased oil production and reserves in the US with little environmental impact.

The project will be conducted in two phases. The objective of Phase 1 is to design the field demonstration, through laboratory work to formulate an efficient chemical system and through investigation and prediction of field response. The objectives of Phase 2 are to successfully implement the field trial and analyze the performance. Comprehensive analysis of the design and implementation of the field trial will be disseminated through reports, technical papers and presentations to small producers and the industry.

A systematic effort will be employed for the field design in Phase 1. Efficient chemical formulations will be identified and tested by a laboratory investigation where formulations are rated through phase behavior studies and oil-recovery performance is tested in flow experiments. Field injection design is derived through (i) studies of past field performance, (ii) a tracer study, (iii) a field injection test, and (iv) simulation studies to predict performance during chemical flooding. An injection plant will be designed.

Field implementation and surveillance tasks will be conducted in Phase 2. An injection facility will be assembled. The plant will be tested and field personnel trained in the operation. Field injection will be monitored to assure proper procedures and chemical performance are obtained. Performance of the flood will be analyzed on a continuous basis.
