5.3.3 Gasification Simulation and Modeling

NETL’s Multiphase Flow Science Group uses highly specialized and sophisticated simulation and modeling tools and methods, validated with experimentation, to efficiently and rapidly advance innovative energy systems and device technologies. NETL’s simulation-based engineering tools (MFiX, Optimization Toolset, etc.) are being used for design and optimization of novel pyrolysis and gasification reactor designs using mixed feedstocks (biomass, plastics, and municipal solid waste), on air separation using oxygen carriers, and more. Focus on these improved gasification reactors, air separation units, and systems for carbon-neutral/negative hydrogen production strongly supports DOE’s mission to reduce emissions and advance a sustainable energy economy.
