Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR) along with Duke Energy, Alstom Power, Electric Power Research, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are developing more innovatively mature turbomachinery components for indirectly and directly heated supercritical CO2 (SCO2) power generation cycles. The project team will perform systems analyses for both directly and indirectly heated cycles; perform turbomachinery layout studies; and perform a technology gap analysis to assess where future investments and testing are needed. AR and ORNL will also perform long duration high-temperature, high-pressure exposure tests on a variety of materials in SCO2 to determine materials compatibility and inform future turbomachinery designs.

Project Benefits

The developed technologies will enable the economic deployment of coal power with carbon capture and sequestration with a predicted levelized cost of electricity reduction over first-generation technologies and a reduced cost of CO2 capture. The project will also provide a technology gap assessment to inform the commercialization path expected to lead to commercial operation.
