The goal of this research is to identify and quantify the nonconventional carbon dioxide (CO2) enhanced oil recovery (EOR) target opportunities within the thick Cypress Sandstone in the Illinois basin. This will be accomplished by completing detailed reservoir characterization and modeling, developing CO2 injection scenarios to maximze storage efficiency, and determining economics for increasing oil recovery while storing CO2.

Project Benefits

This project is aimed at researching oil reservoirs in the Upper Mississippian portion of the Cypress Sandstone in the Illinois Basin. Research and characterization of these reservoirs will help to better estimate potential CO2 storage capacity and applicability of enhanced oil recovery operations within the reservoir. Specifically, this research will undertake detailed geologic reservoir characterization to define CO2 storage potential, residual oil saturation, and CO2-EOR feasibility in these oil reservoirs within the Cypress Sandstone of the Illinois Basin. Findings from this research will help to develop guidelines for CO2-EOR development (e.g., well patterns, spacing, and orientations as well as CO2 injection profiles) of the thick Cypress (and similar formations) with the end result of maximized incremental recovery and CO2 storage. Guidelines for maximizing incremental recovery and CO2 storage in the thick Cypress and similar formations (e.g., well patterns, spacing, and orientations as well as CO2 injection profiles) will be developed from project findings.
