Some of the nation’s top scientists and engineers will gather in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, beginning Aug. 5 for the 2024 FECM/NETL Carbon Management Research Project Review Meeting to discuss climate change mitigation research and share updates on their efforts to advance innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future.

Results from more than 150 research projects sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) will be discussed during the five-day meeting at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

All sessions are open to the public. Review the agenda and registration information.

Presenters from research universities, government laboratories and agencies, electric utilities, research organizations and industry will share their findings from projects advancing a broad range of carbon management initiatives, including the safe sequestration of greenhouse gas in the subsurface; conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added products; and the development of novel materials to capture CO2 from power plants, difficult-to-decarbonize industries and ambient air.

Projects from four FECM research and development programs — Point Source Carbon Capture, Carbon Dioxide RemovalCarbon Conversion and Carbon Transport and Storage — will be discussed. A mixture of plenary, multi-topic breakout and interactive poster sessions will be used to share research results and provide opportunities for discussion and collaboration.

“The meeting’s purpose is to examine the progress of projects in the FECM research portfolio, including projects conducted at NETL's Research and Innovation Center,” NETL Director Marianne Walck explained. “We look forward to sharing information about the cutting-edge technologies that are in development to achieve our nation’s climate change goals and enable clean energy for future generations.”

The projects to be discussed are instrumental components needed to achieve clean energy goals for a net-zero carbon emissions power sector by 2035 and the broader economy by 2050 while also delivering a healthier environment and economic opportunities for communities and workers.

NETL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory that drives innovation and delivers solutions for an environmentally sustainable and prosperous energy future. By using its world-class talent and research facilities, NETL is ensuring affordable, abundant and reliable energy that drives a robust economy and national security, while developing technologies to manage carbon across the full life cycle, enabling environmental sustainability for all Americans.
