NETL researchers and other participants from NETL-led projects will share their internationally recognized geo-data science expertise through presentations and poster sessions at the 2023 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, Dec. 11-15 in San Francisco, California.

NETL’s recent carbon capture and storage (CCS) work, much of which was made possible by the Bipartisan Instructure Law (BIL,) accelerates the commercialization of technologies to safely inject and store carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the subsurface. An integral part of NETL’s CCS work is supported by an innovative use of geo data that provides research universities, government regulators, community groups, property owners and others with tools to accurately predict how CO₂ will behave when it is sequestered in underground storage reservoirs and forecast how CO₂ will react with subsurface conditions. 

The upcoming AGU meeting is the world’s largest geoscience conference. More than 25,000 researchers from more than 100 countries who work in the Earth and space sciences community will share scientific findings and identify innovative solutions. Registration information is available here. NETL will highlight three examples of its geo data work at the AGU event including:

• The Energy Data eXchange for Carbon Capture and Sequestration (EDX4CCS) project, which provides an advanced, strategic CCS-specific data infrastructure system to drive efficient and rapid deployment of CCS efforts. The five-year project targets the deployment of strategic data through the EDX disCO2ver Platform.
• The National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP), an NETL-led, multi-national laboratory effort focused on developing and demonstrating computational tools that offer quantitative assessments of risks associated with geologic carbon storage.
• The Science-informed Machine Learning (ML) for Accelerating Real-Time Decisions in Subsurface Applications (SMART) Initiative. This NETL-led initiative involves several organizations including seven national labs, who contribute to events such as the AGU Fall meeting.
