Women's History Month Profile: Circe Verba

Geologist Committed to Cutting-Edge Science and STEM Education

Circe Verba is a research geologist, “STEMinist” and diversity and inclusion advocate at NETL’s Research & Innovation Center under the Geochemistry team.

She started her career in 2009 as an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) research associate and then participated in the Pathways federal internship program while earning her doctorate in geology and civil engineering from the University of Oregon (2013).

Circe specializes in multidisciplinary projects such as rare earth elements in coal-related underclay and carbon storage applications. She has a passion for advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques that tackle challenges related to fossil energy resources.

Her hobbies involve spending time with her cats, creating mixed media art and role-playing games (such as Dungeons and Dragons or Stardew Valley).

Why is it important that women are equally represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields?

By encouraging STEM, starting in elementary school and continuing this emphasis to advanced degree programs and into the workplace, we can leverage unique perspectives that can shape the future and drive innovation. Equitable representation can improve gender equality and reduce poverty among women by increasing the likelihood they will be prepared to excel in these typically higher-paying jobs. In addition, female perspectives can help improve safety (such as properly fitted PPE), machine learning applications (for instance, voice detection software) and more.

What is one highlight of your career at NETL that you would like to share?

One of the best highlights of Circe’s career is sharing her passion for science with budding scientists. She loves serving as a mentor and seeing research associates flourish in their projects.

What is one of your future career goals?

I want to continue making a difference within the Lab and supporting STEM education in rural Oregon.
