Four NETL researchers have been recognized by Research.com, an international ranking organization, as being among the best scientists in the world in the fields of chemistry, earth science, and engineering and technology.

NETL’s Dan Sorescu, Ranjani Siriwardane, Ray Boswell and Mehrdad Massoudi appear in the second edition of Research.com’s rankings. The list of best scientists was compiled using data derived from a wide range of data sources including publications and citation metrics.

The best researchers ranking is a source of information about the world’s best researchers. Research.com conducted a detailed study of 166,880 scholars determined from a variety of bibliometric data sources.

According to its web site, the objective of the Research.com ranking is to inspire scholars, businessmen and administrative bodies around the world to investigate where top experts are heading and to offer a way for the entire scientific community to learn about the leading experts in specific areas of study in different countries or within research institutions.

The NETL researchers on the list are:

  • Sorescu, a member of NETL’s Computational Materials Engineering Team with 20 years of research experience, has authored or co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed international journal publications and two book chapters. His expertise is in high-performance computations using both quantum mechanical and classical simulation methods as applied to energy conversion and utilization, heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis, nanostructured materials and gas sensors, high-energy materials, photoconversion, and gas sorbents.
  • Siriwardane, a research scientist at NETL for more than 33 years, is the co-inventor of 28 U.S. patents and has earned numerous scientific awards for discoveries that have had an impact on the production of clean and affordable electricity. Her projects include sorbent development to remove sulfur from fuel gasification processes and to capture carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, generated by energy plants and industrial processes. Siriwardane also specializes in the development of catalysts and oxygen carriers to produce hydrogen, a clean fuel.
  • Boswell, a geologist with NETL’s Energy Systems and Analysis Team, specializes in subsurface interpretation and has conducted assessments of unconventional gas resources in Appalachia, the Mid-Continent and Mountain West basins. He also served as a co-chief scientist for gas hydrate field projects on the Alaska North Slope and in the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian Ocean.
  • Massoudi, a Fellow of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2003), has been at NETL for 35 years and is currently working on the Reservoir Engineering Team. He has authored or co-authored more than 180 peer-reviewed international journal publications and also edited or co-edited five technical books for ASME and MDPI Publications. He studies and writes about constitutive modeling of non-linear materials, thermodynamics, continuum mechanics, and rheology of cement in oil and gas operations. He is also an emeritus adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to his NETL research, Massoudi has written numerous articles on world religions.
