NETL Director Discusses Hydrogen Activities of DOE’s Applied National Labs
NETL Director Brian Anderson, Ph.D., will participate in the H2IQ Hour, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, July 21, 2021, at 12 p.m. ET, to provide an update on NETL’s hydrogen activities, including how those efforts are supporting larger diversity, equity, inclusion and environmental justice initiatives.

NETL Director Brian Anderson, Ph.D., will participate in the H2IQ Hour, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, July 21, 2021, at 12 p.m. ET, to provide an update on NETL’s hydrogen activities, including how those efforts are supporting larger diversity, equity, inclusion and environmental justice initiatives.

“All our research, including our wide-ranging hydrogen efforts, is conducted with an eye toward supporting diversity, equity, inclusion and environmental and energy justice,” said Anderson, who also leads the Biden administration’s Interagency Working Group (IWG) on Coal and Power Plant Communities and Economic Revitalization, which was established in January to ensure the shift to a clean energy economy creates good-paying union jobs, spurs economic revitalization, remediates environmental degradation and supports workers in energy communities across the country. “And I’m happy to share this work with the H2IQ audience.”

Anderson will join John Wagner, Ph.D., director of Idaho National Laboratory and Martin Keller, director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on the program, representing DOE’s three applied national laboratories. 

“I look forward to talking about the breakthroughs we’ve made at NETL in hydrogen technologies, including carbon-free hydrogen and hydrogen carrier production through methane pyrolysis and advanced reaction processes like microwave catalysis,” Anderson said. “We’ve also developed CO¬2 capture technologies that work hand-in-hand with hydrogen production to create blue hydrogen, which can support many applications that are difficult to decarbonize. NETL is advancing technology to store large amounts of hydrogen and use it in turbines or fuel cells to generate zero-carbon electricity for the grid, microgrid, or off-grid use.”

The H2IQ Hour will also identify opportunities for further collaboration across all three labs to accelerate technological progress, support DOE’s Hydrogen Shot, and advance the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate goals.

“As applied laboratories, we are uniquely suited to roll up our sleeves and carry our research and development projects into the real world where they can have the most impact,” Anderson said. “As each of us outline our hydrogen research during the H2IQ hour, we will undoubtedly find complementary efforts and ways to support each other as we race to battle climate change.”
