The goal of the project is to enable cost efficient production and widespread use of metal powders by developing a nozzle and control system for gas atomization that can be calibrated to produce specified particle size ranges. This project seeks to enhance the control of metal powder production by gas atomization methods to benefit the implementation of several emerging fossil energy technologies that utilize metal powders of specific size ranges and types, either not available from (novel compositions) or not efficiently produced by industrial powder.
This project will improve the design of high-efficiency gas atomization nozzles in order to control particle size distribution and maximize the yield of powder in special size classes most suitable for high strength structural applications made by net-shape or near net-shape processing (e.g., additive manufacturing) and for thermal spray coatings. Improvement to high-temperature advanced materials will promote the development of advanced power plant designs that can operate at higher temperatures and pressures, with improved efficiency and operational flexibility, resulting in lower capital and operating costs.
