The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO) is expanding America’s skilled energy workforce by investing in hands-on training, education, research opportunities, and academic-industry partnerships.
HGEO has a variety of training and development opportunities, which seek to create, sustain, and retain the next generation of HGEO employees.
Participants
West Virginia University — Robotics
Research Focus: Combining robotics and technology to conduct autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle inspections of tailing dams.
Impact:Paulo described his unique opportunity to apply classroom theory in the field as "quite rewarding," especially knowing his research offered societal advantages to safeguard the environment and increase public safety.
Georgia Southern University — Mechanical Engineering
Research Focus: Evaluating the performance, cost, and environmental impacts of waste coal and biomass and torrefied biomass co-fired power plants.
Impact: Surja described his research as an enriching journey that sharpened his critical abilities, provided multidisciplinary insights, and addressed pressing environmental challenges.
Georgia Institute of Technology — Biogeochemistry
Research Focus: Studying trace elements, including arsenic and selenium, in coal fly ash.
Impact: Estefania feels that the UTR Program has provided her with an excellent opportunity to harness her research skills, and she would recommend the experience to other students.
Funding Opportunities
DOE's Office of Fossil Energy (FE) and Office of Indian Energy notified stakeholders of its plans to launch Energy & Minerals Partnerships for Academic-Industry Career Training (EMPACT), an initiative intended to train and develop America’s energy workforce.
