10.7. DOE Supported R&D for Liquid Fuels/Advanced Fuels Synthesis

In past years, the Department of Energy collaborated with the Department of Defense on Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis of diesel fuel and jet fuel from various feedstocks, including coal and coal & biomass mixtures. Current interest in sustainable aviation fuel is high, and there is opportunity to increasingly decarbonize fuels production through utilization of low-carbon footprint feedstocks like biomass in co-gasification processes, gasification processes integrated with increasingly efficient and low-cost carbon capture, resulting in the production of lower-cost, decarbonized syngas and hydrogen feeds for fuels synthesis. NETL’s Gasification Systems Program provides further information on R&D directions in this area.
