Supervisory Interdisciplinary General Engineer/Physical Scientist, GS-801/1301-15, Laboratory Operations Center, Facility Operations, Maintenance, Operations & Sustainability

This position is located in the Maintenance, Operations & Sustainability, Facility Operations, Laboratory Operation Center, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The Facility Operations organization assures safe, environmentally friendly, and reliable operations at all NETL sites consistent with the NETL mission and in accordance with applicable law, federal policy, and best practices, under direction of the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. Facility Operations includes the following Directorates covering all sites: R&D Operations and Engineering; Facility Planning and Engineering; Maintenance, Operations and Sustainability; and Environmental, Safety and Health and Emergency Management. Facility Operations manages real property assets, including: advanced R&D Laboratories, technical support facilities, operational support facilities, office buildings, daycares, fitness centers, and cafeterias, and facility-related operations, ensuring they are maintained in a manner that promotes operational readiness, personnel and environmental safety and health, property preservation, and life-cycle cost-effectiveness.  Duties include:

  • Serves as a Supervisor, directing and maintaining oversight of professional engineers and scientists; program managers; and CORs and ACORs.  Oversees the activities of contractors that provide a variety of technical support.
  • Provides overall authoritative leadership and direction to pioneering engineering and/or scientific development efforts in achieving new and innovative capabilities relative to new or expanded use of energy resources, environmental cleanup or development of new technologies, and the impacts of energy production on society or the national economy.
  • Leads and participates in a broad range of program and project assessments consistent with authoritative technical expertise. Evaluates programs for progress against established goals and to identify potential problems and initiate, or recommends, as appropriate, corrective or preventive actions to avoid or minimize problems.

Research General Engineer/Research Physical Scientist, GS-0801/1301-13/14/15, Strategic Systems Analysis & Engineering (Direct Hire)

This position is located in the Research & Innovation Center (RIC), Strategic Systems Analysis and Engineering (SSAE) Directorate, Energy Process Analysis Team (EPAT), at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). NETL’s SSAE directorate develops and utilizes advanced process systems engineering models and state-of-the-art computational tools to inform decision-making of complex, multi-scale energy systems. EPAT performs techno-economic analyses of emerging technical matters associated with evolving U.S. energy conversion systems and markets, including power generation, the production and use of alternative fuels (e.g., hydrogen), the conversion of carbon resources to produce useful products (e.g., critical minerals), and a variety of industrial processes. The team’s work is heavily focused on the capture of CO2 from power and industrial applications, as well as novel CO2 removal technologies (e.g., direct air capture).
