NETL Plays Key Role in Doe's New Lab Partnering Service Web Experience

NETL, the only U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory focused on development of advanced fossil energy technologies and the only government-owned and government-operated (GOGO) national laboratory, is playing a prominent part in DOE’s new Lab Partnering Service (LPS) Internet presence that offers technology investors and innovators multi-faceted search capabilities across a range of technology areas resident in the national laboratories.

The LPS website is accessible at www.labpartnering.org.

According to NETL’s Deputy Director and Chief Research Officer Randy Gentry, NETL’s program management capabilities, onsite analysis, and experimental capabilities can be used to pursue high-risk technology developments that enable further industrial development and deployment of commercialized technology solutions. Those capabilities are highlighted in the new LPS website.

“Strong partnerships enable our Lab to deliver on its core mission to advance solutions that enhance the nation’s energy foundation and protect the environment for future generations,” Gentry said. “Partners involved in our ongoing research include small and large businesses, national research organizations, leading colleges and universities and other government laboratories. We recognize how important partnerships are to the nation’s continued success and we are pleased to be a part of the latest LPS outreach effort on the web.”

The LPS site provides three essential information services: an expert search capability giving users a categorized list of research and a direct conduit to DOE experts; technical summaries of technologies and publications available from national laboratories and participating institutions; and a tool for searching DOE-patent content beyond a simple key word search. The LPS web initiative brings numerous benefits and innovations to DOE partnership efforts like:

  • Connecting the public with patents, inventions and the national laboratories’ expertise that contributes to creation of companies and jobs.
  • Presenting opportunities for broad inter- and intra-agency collaborations.
  • Establishing a network of technology transfer professionals to work with DOE information.
  • Creating a software distribution portal pilot, an index of commercial applications of federal R&D facilities, and a scientific literature search function.

The LPS is also featuring customer relationship management that empowers responsive technology transfer teams to support improved transactions, and a rich lead-reporting system for all applications.

An additional way NETL’s work with the initiative is key is because as a GOGO, NETL is the only DOE national laboratory authorized to issue funding opportunity announcements on behalf of the Department – a means for NETL to issue hundreds of new financial awards each year. NETL plans, conducts, and sponsors research to develop oil and gas and coal technologies to produce reliable, affordable, and clean energy in support of the nation’s economy.

NETL’s partnership service offers opportunities for cost-shared direct fundinglicensing, and technology transfer in addition to long-standing commitments to support revitalization of the American Workforce and education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
