The Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) officially opened their Illinois Industrial Carbon Capture and Storage (ICCS) project during a ceremony today at the National Sequestration Education Center at Richland Community College in Decatur, Illinois.
The ADM project, which received funding from the Energy Department’s Office of Fossil Energy (FE), will capture around 1 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year from ethanol production and inject it underground for permanent storage in deep geological formations.
Since injection began on April 7, 2017, ADM has stored 310,000 metric tons of CO2 in the Mount Simon Sandstone saline reservoir. The project is the first commercial-scale saline storage project in the United States. It’s also the first such project to operate with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Class VI injection well permit, which gives the green light to inject CO2 into deep rock formations.
Jarad Daniels, FE’s Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Clean Coal and Carbon Management, spoke at the event. "Today’s event celebrates the advancement of industrial carbon capture and storage technologies," Daniels said. "It also highlights the achievements made by ADM and their partners – and the importance of the public-private partnership that helped make those achievements possible."
The success of the ADM project highlights the significant potential for wide-spread deployment of carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies, not only for industrial processes but also for fossil energy power plants.
