United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) will seamlessly embed a suite of sensors into the industrial gas turbine airfoil, thereby demonstrating additive manufacturing as a relevant process (when guided by physics-based models) for next generation gas turbines. The resulting "smart part" will: maintain its structural integrity, be remotely powered and sensed, and provide real-time diagnostics when coupled to a Health-Utilization-Monitoring System (HUMS).

Project Benefits

This project will demonstrate how additive manufacturing may be used to create a "Smart Part" capable of improving turbine reliability, reducing maintenance downtime, and increasing fossil fuel utilization. The expected overall impact of this technology is energy savings, reduced maintenance costs, and increased reliability of industrial natural gas turbines.
