NETL Director Brian Anderson, Ph.D., will deliver first day keynote remarks at NETL’s annual Fossil Energy Carbon Management (FECM) Spring Project Review meeting Monday, May 2 - 12.

The meeting is a two-week-long virtual public forum which will showcase approximately 100 research projects supporting the U.S. Department of Energy’s FECM mission to minimize the environmental impacts of fossil fuels while working towards net-zero emissions.  The event will provide researchers from industry, academia, national laboratories, and NETL an opportunity to present the results from projects funded by NETL in support of FECM and a forum for discussion and collaboration.

Participants will review research on gasification systems, emissions control programs, and crosscutting programs, which include high performance materials, sensors and control, simulation-based engineering, energy storage and university research and training.

The NETL’s FECM team supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate and equity goals – a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2030, 100 percent clean electricity by 2035, and net-zero emissions by 2050.

Anderson leads NETL’s 1,300-plus employees and guides more than 1,000 R&D projects and project performers in 50 states with a total award value of $5 billion. Under Anderson’s leadership, NETL has initiated technology development and deployment projects that include direct air capture technologies for decarbonization, chemical looping combustion with potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the incorporation of diverse energy sources — including renewable, nuclear and fossil with carbon capture — to more effectively provide environmental sustainability.

In addition to directing NETL’s overall research efforts, Anderson leads the Interagency Working Group (IWG) on Coal and Power Plant Communities and Economic Revitalization, which works to ensure that the shift to a clean energy economy creates good-paying union jobs, spurs economic revitalization, remediates environmental degradation and supports energy workers in coal, oil and gas and power plant communities across the country.

NETL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory that drives innovation and delivers technological solutions for an environmentally sustainable and prosperous energy future. By leveraging its world-class talent and research facilities, NETL is ensuring affordable, abundant and reliable energy that drives a robust economy and national security, while developing technologies to manage carbon across the full life cycle, enabling environmental sustainability for all Americans.
