The Carbon Capture Program is developing the next generation of advanced carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture technologies that can provide step-change reductions in both cost and energy requirements over currently available technologies.

The Carbon Capture Program focuses on a broad portfolio of projects, including post- and pre-combustion capture to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel-based power generation and industrial sources. The program is also developing a wide array of approaches to remove CO₂ that has accumulated in the atmosphere, such as direct air capture with durable storage, biomass carbon removal and storage, and enhanced mineralization.

Information in this month’s edition includes:

·       A review of several innovative technologies developed with support, expertise and strategic guidance provided by NETL that have been licensed for use in next-generation commercial applications to capture CO₂ from power and industrial plants.

·       Highlights from a report that concludes the buildout of the carbon capture and storage industry could result in the creation of up to 1.8 million jobs — largely in the Midwest, Appalachia and southern states — through construction, operation and maintenance of capture, pipeline and storage sites.

·       An update on guidance issued to federal agencies by the White House Council on Environmental Quality to help ensure that the advancement of carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies is done in a responsible manner that incorporates the input of communities and reflects the best available science.

·       Links to upcoming conferences and events to advance the deployment of specific clean energy technologies and solutions.
