Morgantown High School and Suncrest Middle School Win West Virginia Regional Science Bowl Competition
Winners of the 2022 WVSB

Morgantown High School’s Team One and Suncrest Middle School’s Team One, both from Monongalia County claimed victory at the 31st annual West Virginia Regional Science Bowl, held virtually Feb. 4-5, 2022. Twenty teams representing 15 high schools and 17 teams from nine middle schools throughout the Mountain State took part in the competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).

The winners of the 2022 WVSB competition earned an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they will represent West Virginia in DOE’s National Science Bowl scheduled for April 28-May 2. 

The West Virginia Science Bowl tested students’ knowledge of math and science topics. Middle school teams competed Friday, followed by high school students on Saturday. The virtual competition space and altered format adopted in 2021 continued this year. Teams competed individually instead of going head-to-head, with the highest scoring teams moving up. 

Coming in at second, third and fourth place in the high school contest were Princeton High School, Morgantown High School’s Team Two and George Washington High School’s Team One, respectively. In the middle school division, second, third and fourth place were awarded to Fayetteville PK-8, Suncrest Middle School’s Team Two and Jackson Middle School, respectively.

The high schools competing in the regional competition were Braxton County High School, Charleston Catholic High School, Elkins High School, George Washington High School, Liberty High School (Clarksburg), Morgantown High School, Oak Hill High School, Parkersburg High School, Pikeview High School, Princeton Senior High School, Ripley, Weir High School, Wheeling Park High School, Williamstown Middle/High School and Woodrow Wilson High School. For Charleston Catholic, Oak Hill and Woodrow Wilson schools, 2022 marks their first year taking part in the WVSB.

The middle schools competing in the regional competition came from Baileysville Elementary and Middle School, Blennerhassett Middle School, Fayetteville PK-8, Jackson Middle School, Mountaineer Middle School, Pendleton County Middle School, South Harrison Middle School, St. Francis Central Catholic School, Suncrest Middle School, Triadelphia Middle School and Williamstown Middle/High School. The 31st WVSB is the first competition for the teams from Baileysville, Blennerhassett, Fayetteville PK-8 and South Harrison.
