The September 2021 edition of the SSAE Newsletter provides updates about recent research initiatives undertaken within NETL’s Strategic Systems Analysis and Engineering (SSAE) directorate.

This month’s edition highlights:

• Work underway at SSAE to develop, demonstrate and deploy a novel optimization framework for produced water management and beneficial reuse. This research will help oil and gas companies identify custom, fit-for-purpose water treatment and reuse approaches.
• Efforts by SSAE to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen Shot. The aggressive crosscutting initiative calls for reducing the cost of clean hydrogen production to $1/kg H2 within one decade.

• Progress made by NETL and the Global CO₂ Initiative (GCI) to lead the International CCU Assessment Harmonization Group. NETL co-led multiple subteams in this effort and presented outcomes and recommendations during a recent GCI webinar series.

• A recap of virtual presentations by SSAE professionals at DOE-NETL’s 2021 Carbon Management and Oil and Gas Research Project Review Meeting. Presentations covered carbon capture and storage and more.

In addition, the newsletter provides a list of upcoming conferences, meetings and events at which SSAE researchers have or will present findings.
