NETL’s innovations toward transforming carbon dioxide (CO2) from an environmental liability into an economic asset will be detailed during the Lab’s upcoming Annual Project Review Meeting on Carbon Utilization, scheduled for Aug. 30-31 in a virtual setting.

The meeting will highlight the latest technological advancements, techniques, studies and new concepts that are being explored to make beneficial use of CO2 emissions from power plants and other industrial sources. Many of these efforts are making it more feasible to adopt large-scale use of CO2 to cure concrete or to produce fuels, chemicals, aggregates, and other products. Using captured CO2 can address the effects of climate change while ensuring the continued supply of reliable, affordable energy in an environmentally sustainable manner.

NETL CO2 utilization technologies scheduled to be presented include:

  • Life Cycle Analysis of Carbon Utilization Technologies at NETL, presented by Timothy Skone, senior environmental engineer.
  • Electrochemical CO2 Conversion at NETL, presented by Douglas Kauffman, research chemist.

These represent just two of the more than 30 presentations taking place during the event by several entities, including the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research, MicroBio Engineering, Georgia Tech Research Corporation, the Gas Technology Institute, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and many others.

“Carbon Utilization technologies provide an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions while economically producing a useful product. NETL’s Carbon Utilization program has a broad mandate that includes mineralization technologies, conversion of CO2 into fuels and chemicals, and biological uptake via algae.” said NETL’s Joseph Stoffa, who will also deliver the program overview during the meeting. “This event will provide an overview and progress update on projects within the Carbon Utilization portfolio. These presentations will highlight the collaboration between DOE’s national labs, academia, industry, and other Government agencies.”

Participation in the virtual meeting is free, but all attendees are asked to register in advance here. The virtual meeting on carbon utilization is one of several meetings taking place throughout the month of August as part of NETL’s 2021 Carbon Management and Oil and Gas Research Project Review Meeting.

NETL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory that drives innovation and delivers technological solutions for an environmentally sustainable and prosperous energy future. Through its world-class scientists, engineers and research facilities, NETL is ensuring affordable, abundant and reliable energy that drives a robust economy and national security, while developing technologies to manage carbon across the full life cycle, enabling environmental sustainability for all Americans, advancing environmental justice and revitalizing the economies of disadvantaged communities. Leveraging the power of workforce inclusivity and diversity, highly skilled innovators at NETL’s research laboratories in Albany, Oregon; Morgantown, West Virginia; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy and environmental challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.
