Supervisory Interdisciplinary Research General Engineer/Research Physical Scientist, GS-0801/1301-15, Geological & Environmental Systems (Direct Hire)
This position is in the Research & Innovation Center (RIC), Geological and Environmental Systems (GES) Directorate, at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). NETL’s Geological and Environmental Systems Directorate is internationally recognized for its ability to monitor, analyze, and predict the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of complex surface, subsurface, and offshore environments. GES investigations range from the field scale to the molecular level, and over time spans from microseconds to centuries. NETL’s capability includes methods and tools used for resource estimation and risk assessment, such as those that are helping to enable the development of our nation’s ability to store CO2 and hydrogen to help meet the net-zero goal for our nation. The research also focuses on prevention and remediation of environmental challenges posed by fossil energy resource development, both legacy use and future use. GES consists of three research teams whose areas of research include carbon storage; hydrogen storage; critical minerals; multi-scale, multiphase flow, including fractured formations and hydrates; monitoring of natural system behavior; geomaterials science (both geophysical and geochemical aspects of earth materials); geochemistry and geomicrobiology of produced waters; well integrity; geospatial data management and assessment; and methane emissions detection and mitigation.
The incumbent will function as the Team Supervisor to the GES, Geo-Analysis & Monitoring Team and will report to the GES Associate Director.
The GES Geo-Analysis and Monitoring Team supports and mitigates the environmental impact of extracting resources for energy, evaluating both subsurface conditions and environmental emissions during and after resource extraction. The team provides a critical link between researchers, regulators, and industry professionals responsible for the safe, efficient development of subsurface resources.
The team supervisor will manage research expertise in areas of airborne, ground-based, and field detection and monitoring investigations of subsurface features and infrastructure; data mining and analysis; monitoring and modeling of air quality; methane emissions quantification; geophysics research; spectral imaging and remote sensing; tracers; geospatial mapping, analysis, and interpretation; and data analysis using statistical methods, artificial intelligence, and machine learning (AI/ML). Characterization and modeling activities, including using AI/ML and state-of-the-art data visualization, support resource extraction and geothermal development through a combination of geospatial and geotemporal approaches to data.
As Team Supervisor for the Geo-Analysis & Monitoring Team, the incumbent will:
- Possess knowledge and expertise in team capability areas, as stated above.
- Work closely with staff to oversee, evaluate, direct, and assign team capabilities, facilities, and expertise to address research challenges.
- Serve as primary representative for team capability maintenance and growth through communication with other directorate and RIC leadership, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure high quality and impactful generation of team knowledge products (e.g., papers, reports, presentations) and technology innovation (e.g., patents, licenses, software releases).
- Maintain and develop team competency to deliver value to project sponsors within budget, schedule, and safety considerations.
- Perform all elements of federal supervisory duties including but not limited to performance evaluation, safety, training and tracking of work to maximize operational efficiency (both project and administrative).
