Despite her hectic schedule, NETL’s Erin Behrman has found a way to successfully juggle work, family and other responsibilities while her husband serves at a U.S. Army post more than 1,700 miles away.

NETL took part in a recent meeting with experts from across the national lab system, academia and industry who gathered at Pennsylvania State University to discuss the development of atom-thin two-dimensional (2D) coatings with wide-ranging applications.

NETL and Alpharetta, Georgia-based Colonial Pipeline Company (the largest pipeline system for refined oil products in the U.S, ranging from Texas to New York) have signed a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA). As a result, field demonstrations of optical fiber sensor systems developed at NETL on Colonial’s fuel pipeline will continue — in the hopes of progressing technology that enhances the safety and security of pipeline operations through leak detection.

Illinois-based Navistar Inc., and their subsidiary International Truck, working in partnership with NETL, developed the Navistar SuperTruck II, which represents the cutting edge of heavy-duty truck design incorporating several improvements resulting in increased operational efficiency, lower costs and decreased fuel consumption.

Daimler Truck North America, LLC (DTNA), working in concert with NETL, has debuted the Freightliner SuperTruck II, which represents the cutting edge of heavy-duty truck design and engineering to reduce carbon emissions while improving the real-world operational efficiency of the truck.

Recognizing the importance of collaborative assets for energy-related research needs, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has taken steps to ensure a permanent place for researchers around the world to access research data.

NETL project partners Tennessee Technological University, the West Virginia Clean Cities Program and the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium of WVU Energy Institute, are reimagining transportation in rural America by working to build an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Appalachia, and these efforts recently took a crucial step forward in Marion County, West Virginia.

NETL is leading the Center for Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals (CSFC), a focus to help the U.S. chemicals industry retool products and operations for a sustainable future that strengthens domestic manufacturing as the nation transitions to clean energy.

The United States Research Impact Alliance (USRIA), a technology development incubator based in Morgantown, West Virginia, will receive $1 million to accelerate NETL-supported clean energy and manufacturing projects to market and stimulate the formation of new businesses to help reach the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of a net-zero carbon economy by 2050.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and NETL continue to support the engineering scale development of SRI International’s mixed-salt process (MSP), representing one of the department’s many commitments to carbon capture technology innovation. The success of NETL’s Carbon Capture Program will enable cost-effective implementation of technologies that can be applied to the existing fleet of fossil fuel-fired plants, new plants, industrial facilities and the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere.
