The Carbon Capture Technology Compendium is compiled biannually to provide a technical summary of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technology research and development (R&D) sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy/National Energy Technology Laboratory's (DOE/NETL) Point Source Carbon Capture (PSCC) and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Programs. The list below compiles all 189 technology sheets published in the 2022 compendium, as well as previous editions, and includes projects active prior to October 1, 2021. (Note that technology sheets published in prior versions of the compendium may differ slightly in format.)
The projects span the PSCC, CDR, and Research and Innovation Center (RIC) program areas as well as R&D Collaborations for exploring multiple approaches to CO2 capture and modeling the economic and emissions reduction impacts. Technology sheets for RIC Technologies (covering activities in 2022 only) include transformational materials development and systems analysis performed by NETL's RIC. PSCC projects can be further categorized by application in post-combustion and pre-combustion capture for both power generation and industrial sources. CDR projects include applications for direct air capture (DAC), biomass carbon removal and storage, and enhanced mineralization.
Projects can also be filtered by ending scale and key technology. The ending scale of the R&D efforts range from front-end engineering design (FEED) and pre-FEED, to large-scale and small-scale pilot testing (Technology Readiness Level [TRL] 6-7), to conceptual engineering and materials design at bench and laboratory scale (TRL 2-5). Key technologies include solvents, sorbents, membranes, hybrid, novel concepts, or enabling technologies.
