NETL and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (DOE-FECM) will host the first in-person Regional Carbon Management Applicant Education Workshop on Wednesday, April 13, in Columbus, Ohio. This workshop supports implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and will target potential applicants interested in developing various carbon management projects.

NETL, representing U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (DOE-FECM), will join in the April 7 kick-off of the Regional Carbon Management Applicant Education Workshops, which will provide information on how to initiate a variety of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects.
Large Power Transformer
GE Global Research (GEGR) in partnership with Cooperative Energy completed commissioning tests for a first-of-its-kind full-scale prototype large power transformer (LPT), a technology that can lead to greater grid resilience during power outages. This work is being performed under a cooperative agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity’s Transformer Resilience and Advanced Components program (TRAC), which is managed by NETL.
hydrogen
GTI and S&P Global Platts today launched the Open Hydrogen Initiative (OHI), a new collaboration focused on brining industry within the hydrogen marketplace together to provide further transparency into t he environmental impact of hydrogen production and help unlock its full potential as an important driver of energy transitions.  As part of this initiative, GTI has invited NETL to participate in the effort as a result of NETL’s deep expertise and capabilities in Life Cycle Analysis.

Turbine
With support from partners in academia, NETL researchers have taken steps toward realizing the potential of rotating detonation combustion technology, which can offer a number of advantages over conventional internal combustion.
FOA Logo
Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy (FE) and NETL announced selection of four projects for cost-shared research and development under the funding opportunity announcement (FOA), DE-FOA-0002180, Design Development and System Integration Design Studies for Coal FIRST Concepts. When fully negotiated and awarded, it is estimated that approximately $80 million in federal funding will be provided to these projects.
Combustion Laboratory
Researchers in NETL’s Fundamental Combustion Laboratory (FCL) have developed advanced diagnostic techniques that are providing accurate, real-world data to validate models of next-generation fossil fuel and combustible renewable (i.e., hydrogen) technologies like direct power extraction (DPE) systems and rotating detonation engines (RDE).
Airfoils
NETL researchers envision a future in which hospitals, universities and other institutions will use on-site combined heat and power (CHP) systems to produce their own electricity, as well as the energy to heat and cool their buildings, while burning less fuel and releasing fewer emissions into the atmosphere. To make that happen, NETL’s Thermal Sciences Team is designing advanced airfoils for natural gas turbines to enable CHP systems to operate with greater efficiency.
